Festive with Fiji

One thing I miss about high school are the formals. We had our fair share of them at Memorial, and despite the constant complaints of asking a date, finding a dress, and making all the plans, most of us looked forward to them. The holidays is the height of the formal season for college students; some girls attended up to three in one weekend.

Merl and I both went to the Fiji formal this past Sunday. Fortunately for us, both of our dates went to her high school, Austin High, so we had coinciding plans the whole evening.

My weekend of fine dining (see yesterday's post) continued at Sullivan's--one of the best steak houses in Austin. We stuffed ourselves silly with crispy shanghai calamari, jumbo lump crab cakes, iceberg wedge salads, and filets cooked to perfection. It was a nice change of pace from Hardin House beef tips, to say the very least.

We eventually made our way to the venue of the event, Roial, one of the many bars downtown. It featured a nice-sized dance floor and a large upper deck that would have been even more fun if the weather wasn't bordering freezing and the rain had let up.

It had a different feel than high school formals--no adult chaperones breathing down our throats, no parent picture-taking sessions, the entertainment was provided by a band rather than a DJ, and it began when a typical high school formal ended. But at the end of the night it had all the same crucial ingredients: friends all dressed up dancing and celebrating being together.
