Candyland

Second to Halloween, Easter is the holiday I associate with candy most. But rather than the spooky color pallette that comes with plastic pumpkins filled with candy corns, Reese's, and caramel apple pops, Easter reminds me of chocolates in pastel wrappings or rainbows of M&Ms whose colors mimic the springtime spirit. I'm seeing similar color schemes pop up in this season's hot items on the clothing racks.

My first sighting of these sweet silhouettes was at asos.com, which never seems to be lacking in the color, ruffles, or sequins department.

The dainty details--Peter Pan collars, ladder-style faggoting trim and contrast piping--on these tops and dress suit their sweet shades of mint, creme, coral, and ivory.

Any bright shade like this lemon drop yellow top pairs nicely with a stark white, but

the boldest of the candyland crazed will mix and match several of these popping colors together as seen here with this pink and orange affair.

Or this striking plum and citrus contrast.

And an even more eye-catching mix is that of pastels and darker-hued shades. Tory B's spring resort collection makes me think of fresh cotton candy as these models graced the runway in these floor-length chiffon gowns in varied springtime colors. I also love me a good drop waist this season.

Colored jeans have been slowly creeping into stores for the past couple of years now. I feel as though it was spawned from a red jean craze, but has now evolved into a complete and total denim pant color revolution. Denim has said so long to its typical "blue" jean protocol, and I for one am welcoming this unbiased attitude toward new colors with open arms. I just purchased a fluorescent coral pant from Anthropologie and look forward to wearing them throughout the sunny seasons.

After a lifetime of hot Houston summers, I've made my fair share of shorts purchases. Above all, the clear winner of the best fit and most practical pair are the J. Crew chinos. They, like an M&M candy bar, offer a wide variety of both sizes and colors to satisfy all your shorts cravings.

So, there we have it--an assortment of sweet shades are on the menu as color proves to be a crucial ingredient in your closet this spring. Subtlety is not what most of these items are striving for as these colorful concoctions are often teamed with soft frills and delectable details sure to send anyone on a style-induced sugar high. Skittles asks you to "taste the rainbow", while the fashion police are telling us to "wear the rainbow" this season. So, push the neutrals aside and make room in your wardrobe for some candy-inspired clothing that's just as sweet as a Sweet Tart.
