Sense Appeal IX

for the eyes:
Happy 1st birthday to precious baby Quinn!

for the mind:
A friend surprised me with a touching note tucked in this card. She's in agreement with me that the slow death of the handwritten letter is something of a tragedy. The quote by George Bernard featured on the card embraces my creed for paving your own path. All too often we are told we need time to "find ourselves." The ingredients, the talents, the drive, the passion and the experiences are there. Our task is to find them and create yourself with them. This, along the encouraging note inside, was just what I needed to rejuvenate my creative flow on a Monday afternoon.

for the ears:

Ellie Goulding's hit single, "Lights", has been on the Billboard Charts for I swear a solid two years now. It appears as though she's made her mark in the music world and is here to stay for awhile. I'm a big fan of her style, but if you're way past "Lights" like me, try "Atlantis" which is featured on her sophomore album, Halcyon. It occurred to me that this was not the first time I had come across the word Halcyon; it's also the name given to a coffee shop and lounge in downtown Austin. Curious as to the role in both of these contexts, I sought to find out more. Our friends at define the term as both happy, joyful and carefree and tranquil, calm and peaceful. These descriptions accurately depict the contrast in the album: its tracks deliver a somber calmness in emotionally-charged tracks like "My Blood" while a lift in mood and sound manifests the euphoria she creates in tracks like the featured "Atlantis."

fashion for feel:

This ad was featured in my textiles class as an example of innovative advertising. It truly is worth watching as it traces the landmark moments of the most popular fragrance of all time, Chanel No. 5. Whether fashion is your forte or not, I think we all find some allure with Chanel--it's iconic; it's timeless; it's name alone epitomizes glamour. This perfume, with its "dizzying success", is certainly a testament to all of these things.

for taste:
Merl introduced me to this local favorite of Tarrytown residents (her neighborhood just west of campus), and it quickly became my favorite hidden gem. With a Randall's next door, it's the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of campus to grab groceries and a bite to eat. Food! Food! serves up tasty meals that offer a home-cooked feel most restaurants cannot match. They also offer a wide selection of baked goods (galaxy bars are literally out of this world!), made-to-order gourmet sandwiches and take-home foods like chicken salad, cowboy hummus and pasta salads.

My absentee ballot made it in the mail weeks ago, and I look forward to watching the polls tally up the votes in this neck-and-neck race, especially with this being my virgin voting experience in a presidential race. Happy Election Day...if you've gone to vote that is!
