February Fêtes

I've tried to wean off making Bridget's Own Diary my social diary, as that kind of activity is better suited for the many other social media platforms we have like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. But, rules are meant to be broken and Monmouth was just way too fun this year to not do at least a brief blurb.

As you may recall from last year, Monmouth is our annual winter formal with Pi Phi. A big group of dates went to Truluck's for dinner before heading to the Hyatt hotel for the main event.

There was a photo booth, a face painting station,

and a packed dance floor.

Monmouth gets hyped as the best date party of the year, and it was unanimously agreed among all the KKGs and PBPs that it was just that. Two down, two to go!

Breakfast Bar: 21 & Under

 photo IMG_6084_2_zps22a9c235.jpg
I'm happy to report that my 20th birthday was an outstanding success. It fell on a hump day this year, which proved to be the best way to break up my week. Not long after the semester started came a night when my body was exhausted but my mind just wouldn't agree. As I tossed and turned, the party planner I didn't know I had in me concocted the idea of a midnight breakfast bash for my birthday. The vision became a reality on the eve of my birthday, which just so happened to fittingly fall on Fat Tuesday!

 photo IMG_6039_2_zpsab537cfb.jpg
The main course was an assortment of cereals to choose from. I tried to include most of the kid-friendly favorites, as I wanted the evening to be an ode to childhood since I was making my departure from my teenage years.  Froot Loops, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, Honey Nut Cheerios, and my personal favorite, Life, all made the cut.

 photo IMG_6070_2_zps8eef3c36.jpg
All the sugar-coated cereals were poured into large bowls with scoopers and several pitchers of milk (chocolate and regular) were spread throughout the table.

 photo IMG_6081_2_zps6e703028.jpg
Since cereal is one of the few foods almost anyone can make (right there with toast and PB&Js), I insisted we take this basic snack up a notch; I supplied a variety of mix-ins like an assortment of berries, bananas, crushed birthday Oreos, marshmallows and chocolate chips.

 photo IMG_6071_zps0873c0f5.jpg
We relished the "Fat" in Fat Tuesday and offered powdered donuts, Cinnabons and Sister Schubert sausage rolls to all--which were the first to go as I predicted.

Sweet Caroline was nice enough to bring me a "birthday pancake"

complete with twenty colorful candles!

Just before the guests began to arrive, these flowers (featured here) arrived from Mollie in Dallas, so I naturally made them the centerpiece next to the...

mimosa bar! Some of these plastic flutes ended up being filled to the brim with chocolate milk or

straight-up champ with frozen raspberries.

The guests were first greeted with a menu highlighting all the yummy treats that were promised to them on the (Facebook) invite.

And in the middle of a stressful school week for many, I was happy to bring all my friends to one place

for some good eats and from what I can tell,

some late night fun.

While I've always respected the tradition that your birthday is your one day to don a tiara and celebrate you, I found just the opposite this year. I received so many thoughtful gifts like this balloon bouquet from Hannah and Michelle (they take good hints!),

 photo IMG_6196_2_zpsfcfee10f.jpg
a lovely array of sweet and sassy cards all with touching notes inside,

 photo 533068_10151549090762835_1577971288_n_zpseebea668.jpg
and heart-warming words from everyone I love. I guess they love me back, and the whole day was a wonderful reminder of that, which is all I could have asked for and more. This sentiment was just in time for Valentine's Day which I got to spend with Merl and her parents (who I like to think are my Austin parents.)

Some claim your twenties and thirties brings a drought in friendship. I have every confidence in the world I will never be in short supply of the extended family I have in each one of my wonderful friends.

Flower Power

 photo FLOWERSUSE_zps9ed3d0ca.jpg
Growing up with half a dozen older siblings forced me to constantly check-in with myself and make sure I wasn't trying to grow up too fast. As lucky #7, looking up to my siblings was looking up to sisters getting engaged and brothers making down payments on their first homes. Turning twenty last week made me feel like a little part of me had caught up with the rest of the bunch. I would no longer be referred to as the little teenage sister.

As this feeling set in, I wondered what it really meant to "grow up." Will the songs I can sing along to become the "oldies" on the radio? Will my old photos be used as illustrations of the fashion faux pas of generations past? Will my conversations start revolving around the pros and cons of the local grocery stores? Will I wake up at 5a.m. more often than I go to sleep at that same hour? Maybe some day, but for now, the only glimpse of adulthood I've noticed is a greater appreciation for flowers. I received four different arrangements in the past week and I'm finding them to be a lovelier gift than I would have as a sweet sixteen-year-old.

So, as I strive to juggle this balancing act of sustaining my youth while appropriately implementing the right dosages of maturity, I think to myself "baby steps, ma chérie, baby steps."

Sense Appeal XVI

for the eyes:
UT threw a super big bash for my birthday right on the campus mall and there was a really solid turnout. That's me being thrown in the back.

for the mind:
 photo hexagons_zps4ab401df.png
I've had a lot of recent encounters with the six-sided polygon we commonly refer to as a hexagon. I learned in French class that France is often considered to be in the shape of a hexagon, and since then I've seen it appear in patterns, jewelry and graphics that all suit my fancy. Upon this realization, it occurred to me that six--albeit its diabolic nature--is a significant number in my life as I have six siblings and roommates.

for the ears:

I purchased Rihanna's new hit, "Stay", less than 48 hours ago and it's already been played 60+ times on my iTunes. I'd be lying if I said I don't love her upbeat first claims to fame like "Pon de Replay" and "SOS", but this slower ballad is not far from equal caliber.

fashion for feel:

I've been so pleased to have been reacquainted with a bit of a wind chill here in Austin over the past week. I'm not ready to part ways with my winter wardrobe yet, and lucky for me I'm making a trip up to the northeast this weekend where the lows will be in the twenties.

I'll be packing up all my winter woolies including some scarfs, which I like to consider a staple of any girl's wardrobe year-round. I'm having a hard time resisting this baby pink Wildfox scarf that has a subtle ode to my Kappa heart as the center reveals our flower, the fleur de lis.

for taste:

My littles Michelle and Hannah kidnapped me before Monmouth on Saturday for a sister smoothie date. We went to JuiceLand which I had never been to despite hearing countless rave reviews. It lived up to the hype and has more ATX vibes than any place I've ever stepped foot in in this capital city.
 photo 13_1_1_Weaver_zpsa72a43c4.jpg
I frequently crave the N.R.G smoothie from Houston's Smooth Island & Juice Bar and they had a similar thing going on on their menu. Juiceland's "The Gunshow"--a mixture of bananas, blueberries, egg white protein and agave--was just as good (if not better) than my Houston go-to. And the super thick straws make for easy sippin' on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Happy Prez Day!

& love,
such a silly game we play!
oh, like a summer's day in may.
what is love, what is love?
i just want it to be love.

Whatever captures your heart--may it be a large slice of lemon meringue pie, gold bangles up to your elbow, Bodoni typeface, a certain someone, your childhood teddy bear, or putting on a heel one inch too high--may you indulge in these things today. For today, we celebrate love!

Give & Take

I love the reward system that comes with the hectic schedule of a college student. Every walk to class, promptly addressed email, and note taken are all just the mini-bridges we cross every week before we're rewarded with the blissful weekend. It's a routine we students have become accustom to from Kindergarten on and thankfully, it's one thing that won't change when we make the school to real world transition not too long from now.

This weekend, I escaped to the countryside for a brief overnight visit with Mollie. We treated ourselves to a late night brownie à la mode and caught up over coffee in her mom's cozy country home. On my dreary ride back into Austin, I headed straight for my sister's to watch her two little ones and was very surprised to be greeted by my parents and pup minutes after they had left. We had a low-key pre-birthday celebration with presents and prosecco, toasting the final days of my parents' subjection to teen angst! Here are all the things making my headlines:

I received the Girl Scout cookies I ordered from my niece, and the personal invoice included put a bigger smile on my face than the peanut butter patties, thin mints and caramel delights all combined.

SOMEBODY PINCH ME. The stars have aligned...literally. Josh Schwartz, I deem you the MVP Match Maker of the Year.  The stars of his two hit series, Adam Brody of The O.C. and Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl are MADLY IN LOVE dating. Happy Valentine's Day to all of us who spent years pining over quirky and adorable Seth Cohen and those of us whose number-one girl crush can be spelled with the single letter, B. All I can say is CONGRATS, YOU GUYZ.

For over a year now, I've had "join UT's fashion group" on my to-do list. Due to scheduling conflicts, it always seemed to roll over to the next to-do list time and time again until last Tuesday when I was able to attend my first meeting. Several lucky members who have been involved over the years have been at Fashion Week in New York all weekend and needless to say, I am insanely jealous. A fellow Kappa is there and her Instagrams (as shown above) are unreal. Hopefully I'll get to fill her shoes next year or the year after that.

Pinning has developed a hierarchy of different levels of expertise, and discovering these pinning princesses (or princes, may you have it) is a skilled trade all its own. This weekend, I stumbled upon a pinner whose taste is completely akin to mine. It shouldn't be a surprise that this younger Kappa sister, who has mad photography skills, also has a knack for curating images.

Follow her! She'll make you find sheer delight in ampersands, playful patterns, fancy footwear, and (eek!) balloons.

So, this week marks that pivotal point in the semester--that point where school really becomes "a thing." In keeping with this busy-ness theme, the social calendar is also picking up momentum and doesn't look to be slowing down much until the end of the semester. And though I wonder how it will all get done, it always does, and we always have fun doing it. Pictured above is the Cowboys Sweetheart night where all of us girls got inducted into UT's Cowboy alum association as the selected sweethearts! Though this will make my social calendar even more robust, I can't complain!

And congrats to Maggie and Caroline for making their entrance into society and looking gorgeous while doing so! These Dallasites invited several of us to the Dallas Symphony Ball and we had the best time mingling with friends from other schools, but as per usual, UT took over.

So, here we are at yet another Monday, quite a few steps to go before we see that light at the end of the tunnel we call the weekend. But, let's enjoy the fact that each one is well-deserved.
