This & That, Here & There

7.28.2016

I trusted Merl wouldn't lead me astray when selecting a coffee shop for me in DC. I found myself at Tryst and fell in love.

I am so thankful I took a full four-day weekend to visit my very best friend. Supposedly, it takes a minimum of that many days to truly unwind from work. She's even better than how I remembered, and I feel rejuventated until we meet again (here in Houston!) in October. Here's five links to read before or during your weekend:

These strangers unwind and relax sans a vaca.

This year's presidential election have your political compass out of whack? See where you really stand.

These shrimp tacos are on the menu to cook with my mom tonight. We're savoring summer's best ingredients while we still can; next up's okra and fresh Fredericksburg peaches are soon to follow.

I tried SoulCycle for the first time in D.C. when I spotted a studio a stone's throw away from Merl's house on 14th. I dug it and experienced some of this, but I'm not an addict...yet.

As I continue to fine tune my photography skills, I'm struck by professionals who have found their signature style. Like Irene Suchocki who makes all cities look magical when peering through her lens.

Stay tuned for a more detailed DC recap coming up soon. {This post will appear live tomorrow on L. Avenue as part of the Friday Five series.}

Friday Five: A Traveler's Guide

7.21.2016

I am up, up and away this weekend heading East to see my bestie in D.C. Lyndsey, the blogger I contribute to, is off to California. With this and William off to fish the Alaskan seas with his family, I had no choice but to make this week's edition a travel guide in disguise.

what to wear :: Lyndsey rounded up the cream of the crop for this year's Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I can vouch for these slip-ons as the best stylish sneaker to pack for any pedestrian city. In dire need of some more work out gear but aiming to avoid paying Lulu prices, I scored these leggings and this lightweight jacket.

what to eat :: I'm prepping my parents for their upcoming trip to Paris and can't help but be nostalgic about my summer abroad. I'll get a taste of it this weekend at Le Diplomate for a late déjeuner. Pass the pommes frites, please!

what to do while getting there :: My plan is to sit back, relax (read!) and enjoy the plane ride, but knowing me, I'll likely not be able to resist getting a little personal productivity done during my PTO. Here's ways you can give back, educate yourself and even exercise when you find yourself playing the waiting game.

what to plan next :: Visiting the city hosting the summer Olympics is high on my bucket list. I'm not Brazil bound, but I'll be glued to the TV to watch gymnast Simone Biles. If you don't know her inspirational story, you should.

what to capture :: Seventeen Instastars show you the secrets to their success. Achieve celebrity status with these tips. I've made a mental note to create a cohesive feed and know my signature color palettes. Round of applause to LZ for mastering these two.

Have wonderful weekends where you are!

My Friday Five

7.15.2016

If you've missed my regular posting here, I should probably mention I've been publishing elsewhere. I contribute the 'Friday Five' column on L. Avenue, a local fashion blogger who I found a lot of common ground with over Common Bond coffee despite our slight age gap.

I provide some fresh content from around the web for her and in return, she rewards me with wardrobe additions and the inspiration to keep reading and writing.

My job affords me the same opportunity as the author behind the Biscuit 'Journal.' There, I discuss design, products, events and seasonal features. But, I'm back at BOD today as Lyndsey (of L. Avenue) gave me the week off, so I give you all a Friday Five of Bridget's very own.

I do, I do! Anything for you, sweet Caroline. Can't wait to shower you with all the love you deserve leading up to your big day.

shop the soft Turkish T towels here // more on my summer reads soon!
An homage to my signature blog sign-off, I couldn't resist this monogram style, simply MB, for my Turkish T towel I took to Florida with me.

this utilitarian shirt dress will serve me well for Sunday church every season of the year
My mom is the best and worst influence on me: she shows me sales I shouldn't shop and offers rosé on week nights when I really should resist. But, as number seven, I like to indulge her, which is why I copied her and bought this Claridge + King dress on mega sale at a store actually called Indulge.

I was more intrigued, though, by their rack of tennis apparel, all way too stylish to be sportswear. I was motivated to earn the rights to buy a skirt if I see major improvements on my skills from my lessons at Rice I started with Lexi, Caroline and Sarah this week.

cooling off with Carlos Dangers - jalapeño & pineapple house infused tequila, triple sec, lime & agave
So, I'm seeing old friends and making new. My new co-worker Abbey comes to us from Alabama, and I look forward to our cubicle convos daily. And of course, the occasional happy hour convo, which was happening here at La Grange with Carlos Dangers to sip and chips and queso to dip.

many favorite friends all in one place -- me, Nicole, Courtney, Josephine, Caroline, Sarah & Analise
Tonight, I'm seeing college Kappa friends both the year above and below. Next weekend I'll be reunited with my first ever college friend who I now call my best, Merl, in DC. She was a bday girl this week, so wish her the best!

'Cause she is. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Sense Appeal: from Sea to Shining Sea

7.06.2016

I went straight from being with my six sisters in Seaside to the six brothers in my boyfriend's family, lakeside.
I hope you found yourself full on fireworks, food, friends, family and fun from the Fourth. I bounced from one body of water to the next, leaving behind the beach for the lake to spend back-to-back weekends with my favorite families. First, my own. Then, William's.

for the eyes:
Our Fourth was an American classic in every way -- from frisbee tosses to boat cruises to homemade BBQ.
Sunset photos are cliché for a really good reason.

for the ears:
video

Is my brother Jimmy crushing the waves or are the waves crushing him?

for the mind:

Hanging on the opposite side of this retro rotary telephone are interestingly enough, the guiding principles for Rotarians. Four questions is all it is to leading a good life:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

reminding me how simple it really is to establish a value system for our everyday actions and decisions. And how vital these values have been in forming the foundation of families like these.

fashion for feel:

I fell in love with this little white dress my sisters found in Alys Beach and quickly convinced me it had my name written all over it. The fact that we were all together added sentimental value to what was certainly a splurge.

I found a one-piece bather! And busted it out the first full day.

for taste:

With groups this size, most meals are spent at home which, yes, leads to dishes, but more importantly to trailing conversations into the night and wine being poured 'til way past bedtime.

I'm back to reality and missing my people. Thanks for caring for what I'm sharing; it helps me hold on tighter to the memories.
